My Topic

Hello.
My topic is "coffee".
Coffee is one of my favorite beverages, and it is drunk all over the world. Some countries, such as New Zealand, have their original style to drink coffee. In New Zealand, for example, most cafes sell 'flat white', and foreigners are usually unfamiliar with it.
I would like to know what the other countries' style to drink coffee are and its history etc., so I chose this topic to research.

Hope you enjoy reading my topic :-)

Hi Q
Thank you for choosing the interesting topic “Coffee”. I’d like to say that as you know coffee is one of the general drinking in the world. Coffee was discovered about 400 B.C, probably Ethiopia and spread rapidly to the Arabian countries and Middle-East. Offering a cup of coffee to a guest is part of Middle Eastern hospitality. An interesting subject in the history of coffee is its relationship with the religion of Islam. You probably know that Islam prohibits drinking alcohol, or taking any other intoxicating substances. So when coffee first started becoming popular, there was a big debate about whether it was legal or not, because of course it has an effect on the body. This went back and forth over more than a hundred years, and sometimes coffee was made illegal, and then the next ruler would decide that it was legal after all. Eventually coffee became accepted as Islamically permitted by almost everybody. One of the earliest uses of coffee was actually as a medicine, although there was also a debate as to whether it was helpful or harmful. And you know that debate is still going on today.

Hi Bahram,
Thank you for your interesting and useful tips.
Yes, as you said, coffee was found in Ethiopia, then it spread to Middle-East.
I will post some more details about the history. But I'm much more interested in its drinking styles, so I may write about them more than its history.

See you soon!

Hi Hisako,

Interesting comments on drinking coffee, but did your mama ever tell you that coffee is actually bad for you. Well if you drink more than one cup a day, that is. Tea, in particular green tea which your home country producers in excellent form, contains much less caffeine than coffee. Try drinking some.

Cheers,

Michael.

Hi Michael,
When I was a little, my mum used to say that I shouldn't drink coffee because it contains lots of caffeine, and caffeine affects my brain.
But I heard tea contains caffeine more than coffee.
I will research more about this.
