Italian Styles

There are several Italian styles to drink coffee. Probably cappuccino is the most famous Italian coffee style. Cappuccino has three layers – espresso, hot milk and foamed milk – and there is some cocoa on the top (In Japan, people normally put some cinnamon powder on the top of cappuccino).
Caffe latte is also a famous and popular Italian style to drink coffee. In Italian, “latte” literally means “milk”, so “caffe latte” means “coffee with milk”. Caffe latte is called “café au lait” in France and “café con leche” in Spain. People drink caffe latte only for breakfast in Italy. The difference between cappuccino and caffe latte is the amount of the milk: cappuccino has much more milk than caffe latte. What we shouldn’t forget is espresso. Espresso is one of the Italian styles as well, and it is used for the base of both cappuccino and caffe latte. Espresso is very bitter, and it contains 75 mg of caffeine per ounce (about 30 ml). The amount of caffeine which espresso has is almost four times as much as a normal coffee has.

Turkish Styles

In the coffee history, the Italian word “caffe” is adopted by “kahveh”, which is a Turkish word that Turkish Empire, Ottoman, used to use (currently “kahveh” is spelled as “kahve”). Therefore, Turkish style is one of the historical styles to drink coffee.
Turkish coffee is the style for Turkish people to drink coffee. It is thick, bitter and aromatic. How to make Turkish coffee is:
①Put 1 cup of cold water and some sugar (optional) in a small saucepan, and bring it to boil.
②Remove from the stove and add 1 tablespoon of finely ground coffee and a pinch of ground cardamom.
③Put the saucepan on the stove again and bring it to boil.
When you drink Turkish coffee, you need to drink only the top clear layer; otherwise you will drink the ground coffee, too!

Kiwi Styles

Flat white is a Kiwi style. It is also drunk in Australia. Its 1/3 is espresso and 2/3 is steamed milk. Flat white is called “café latte” in North America.

Japanese Styles

There is no Japanese style to drink coffee. However, if you go to a café in Japan, you will see lots of coffee menus on the list. Japanese people tend to name something “like” or “style”, even though it is not used in that way or in the country. For example, Japanese people sometimes put some whipped cream on top of the coffee, and they call it as “Vienna style coffee” or “like Vienna coffee”. However, people in Vienna do not drink coffee like this style, so it is a kind of Japanese style.
Canned coffee is also one of the Japanese styles to drink coffee. In 1965, Mr. Miura developed a canned coffee, and it is probably the first canned coffee in the world. Currently, a wide range of canned coffees such as sugarless, coffee with milk and long black are sold in Japan.
In addition, Japanese people make coffee jellies. They normally put some fresh cream, whipped cream or milk on top of the coffee jelly. It is popular, especially in summer.

Again Hullo Hisako!

I have come across some of the different styles of coffee making in several countries as you mentioned like Turkey, Japan, New Zealand, Italy etc.

But, my favourite one is "caffe latte" from Italy, as it has a nice taste, especially when added milk and maybe some cream with more sugar in it.

I always have this from that coffee shop about 50 meters from our WT Building down Queen Street.

I want to let you know of one fact, and that is the Samoan style of making a cup of coffee.

1 50ml cup of hot water + 5 spoonful of coffee + 6 spoonful of sugar + no milk = keep you awake the whole night.

Hey! do you believe it or not. Ha ha ha ha! Good Samoans eeeh!

Hi Poeelama,
Is that true? Do Samoan people drink coffee like that? It would be very strong, like espresso!

Hi Hisako!

That is true if I think back in the last 40 years at the island. However, nowadays, we understand that caffine in coffee is too strong and sometimes causes disease, so the Samoan system of drinking coffee has been changed.
We are following your way.

Hello Poe,
Sorry for the delay of commenting back.
I don't say that you should stop drinking coffee in your way, but may be you should reduce drinking coffee in your way...
